I am sad to say this, but, in my opinion, we are heading for a major mid-air disaster due to the number of violent drunks on aeroplanes.
I think we have been really lucky so far, but it is just a matter of time.
It’s getting out of control and they are a disgrace. Once they get on that plane, they are a ticking time bomb and it seems to be happening more often.
You see stag and hens dos at 6am at the airport bar, downing pints, as if it’s the end of the world. And, if there’s a delay – God help every one of us.
Don’t they ever think?
And now racism seems to be creeping into their vile conversations and behaviour.
There are many other passengers onboard, some with small children, yet these mindless idiots get into such a state, they are just dangerous. And, of course, the knock-on effect could be catastrophic and doesn’t bear thinking about.
More and more times now, the police are being called to arrest passengers and escort them from the planes.
We then have to wait while they try to find their luggage, then we miss the take-off slot and so more time is wasted.
Then people miss connecting flights and coaches.
The staff on board these planes have the patience of a saint. They are not there to quell fights, they are there to make our flights comfortable and give us a service. They are ordinary people trying to make a living.
One of my dear friends, Jane Joseph, is a frequent flyer and she’s seen a huge difference in the behaviour of passengers. Recently, she was abused on a flight to Majorca – in fact, she was spat at. This vile man was convinced that she was sitting in his seat. It was pointed out that she was not by a lot of people and the staff, but it made no difference to him.
As the flight went on, it got worse with the group of no-marks he was with, who got louder and louder. The behaviour while waiting to use the bathroom left nothing to the imagination. The police were waiting for them at the other end of the flight.
I remember years ago, when you travelled by plane, you would ask a lady if she would like the window seat, or if you could with their bag – but now it’s just a cattle market.
Last week, there was a terrible incident on one of the budget airlines over Portugal. A plane was forced to divert in mid-air, as a legless passenger was attacking the cabin crew and passengers. He was also being racially abusive.
The plane had to land in Lisbon Airport and 200 passengers had to stay overnight. So who picked up the bill for that? I’m sure it wasn’t the drunk.
If I was in charge, there would only be one punishment and that would be a life ban from every aeroplane in the world.
There is too much at stake to let them on again.
I’ve witnessed two incidents in the past year – and one I really couldn’t believe.
This guy was sitting two rows in front of me and seemed very agitated. He was downing drinks as if it was his last moment on earth.
He was asked to slow down and was abusive. He then leapt up to use the loo. Three minutes later, smoke was seeping from under the door. You guessed it – he’d lit a cigarette on the plane.
There was chaos onboard and he was arrested.
Another one I saw really disturbed me. A couple were arguing for about half-an-hour constantly. In fact, it started in the airport.
People were getting really fed up, a couple of kids started crying.
The cabin staff went over several times. Next minute, he punched his partner in the face and all hell let loose. Two guys got up to step in and she turned on them and started fighting. How it was calmed down, I will never know. Of course, they were both arrested.
I will repeat again … anybody that puts a full plane of people at risk, the punishment should be jail and a life ban!
